Nano-Syringe Delivers Combination, Targeted Brain Cancer ...

THE METHODIST HOSPITAL SYSTEM

Nanomedicine researchers at the Methodist Neurological Institute and Rice University have developed a way to selectively kill brain cancer cells by using a tiny syringe to deliver a combination of chemotherapy drugs directly into the cells. Patients with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), the most common and aggressive malignant primary brain tumor, typically have a prognosis of 14-month median survival time despite medical interventions, which currently include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. The Rice-Methodist group developed the hydrophilic carbon cluster (HCC) antibody drug enhancement system (HADES), named after the Greek god of the underworld. Through a 20-nanometer syringe, which is 2 million times smaller than a coffee mug, this nanovector successfully delivered a combination of three chemotherapy drugs into GBM cells in vivo, resulting in a high kill rate. India launches antitrust investigation against Google

India launches antitrust investigation against Google

Google remains tied up in a censorship case with the Indian government, and things aren't looking rosy for the search giant in the interim period before its May 23rd court hearing. The Wall Street Journal reports that the Competition Commission of India is launching an antitrust investigation of Google to examine the company's alleged "discriminatory and retaliatory practices relating to AdWords." The antitrust probe follows a complaint from Consim Info Pvt. Ltd., an Indian web conglomerate which apparently requested that the Competition Commission step in to ensure fair competition in online advertising. The exact reach of this investigation is unclear; the commission will initially focus on AdWords, though it's keeping the door open for examining other Google services as deemed necessary. Hear that sigh? That, friends, is the sound of Google gearing up for one long Indian summer.

Man wanted in USS Cole bombing reported killed

AP

This photo released by the FBI in May 2003 shows Fahd al-Quso, who was charged with helping to plan the attack on the USS Cole that killed 17 American sailors in 2000.

By msnbc.com news services

Updated at 7:42 p.m. ET: Two Yemeni members of al-Qaida, including a top leader wanted in the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole, were killed in their car by an apparent U.S. drone strike in southern Yemen, residents there and a spokesman for an al-Qaida-linked group said Sunday.

The strike occurred in the Wadi Rafad valley in Shabwa province.

One of the dead men was believed to be Fahd al-Quso, who was convicted for a role in the 2000 bombing of USS Cole in the port of Aden, and the other was Fahed Salem al-Akdam, residents said, Reuters reported.

The plane that fired the missile had been sighted in the sky, they said.

The U.S. did not immediately confirm the deaths, according to The Associated Press.

No one else was killed and no one else was traveling in the vehicle, the residents said.
???
A local government official in Shabwa confirmed the attack, and, separately, a statement from the al Qaida-linked Ansar al-Sharia group said, "Al-Qaida affirms the martyrdom of the Fahd al-Quso in an American attack this afternoon in Rafad.''

Al-Quso, 37, was on the FBI's most wanted terrorist list, with a $5 million reward for information leading to his capture. He was indicted in the U.S. for his role in the USS Cole bombing in which 17 American sailors were killed and 39 injured.

A New Yorker magazine story from 2006 described al-Quso as a member of the al-Qaida support team in Aden. Al-Quso had been tasked with capturing video of the blast from a nearby apartment for al-Qaida but he slept through his morning alarm and didn't set up his camera on time.

Al-Quso served more than five years in a Yemeni prison for his role in the attack and was released in 2007. He briefly escaped prison in 2003 but later turned himself in to serve the rest of his sentence.

Al-Quso was also one of the most senior al-Qaida leaders publicly linked to the 2009 Christmas airliner attack. He has allegedly met with the suspected bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab in Yemen before he left on his way to execute his failed bombing over Detroit.

In December 2010, al-Quso was designated a global terrorist by the State Department, an indication that his role in al-Qaida's Yemen branch had grown more prominent.

Local Yemeni official Abu Bakr bin Farid and the Yemeni Embassy in Washington confirmed al-Quso was killed in Rafd, a remote mountain valley in Shabwa, according to AP. It is the area where many of al-Qaida leaders are believed to have taken cover, including the U.S.-born cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, killed in a U.S. airstrike in Yemen last year.

Yemeni government officials reported that Al-Quso and al-Awlaki were killed in an airstrike in 2009 in Rafd, but they both resurfaced alive.

Al-Quso was known for his ability to move in disguise. He was from the same tribe as al-Awlaki, and local tribesmen said he was a close aide. He studied ultraconservative Salafi Islam as a teenager in northern Yemen, then returned home to learn welding.

The White House and the State Department had no immediate comment.

Yemen's government has been waging an offensive on al-Qaida militants, who have taken advantage of the country's political turmoil over the last year to expand their hold in the south.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Women and 3D help 'The Avengers' set box office record

Women bought 40 percent of all tickets to 'The Avengers.' The action movie beat 'Harry Potter' in setting a first weekend box office record with $200 million in? ticket sales.

"The Avengers" proved that five superheroes are better than one by bursting into Hollywood's record books with a massive $200.3 million in ticket sales over its opening weekend in US. and Canadian theaters, kicking off Hollywood's summer movie season with a bang.

The domestic debut for the big-budget, effects-filled movie from Disney's Marvel studios sped past last summer's "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows - Part 2," which opened with $169.2 million in its first weekend, according to Box Office Mojo. In March, "The Hunger Games" opened with $152.5 million, the fourth largest opening in box office history.

The North American record was foreshadowed by the strong box office a week ago, after it opened overseas in 39 countries and took in $185.1 million.

The Avengers, which reunites Marvel comic heroes Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk and Black Widow, has collected $641.8 million since it opened in international markets on April 25.

"We keep thinking we have a sense of what this movie can do, or will do, and every time we get a report it does even better," said Dave Hollis, Disney's executive vice-president of distribution. "This is very satisfying, to say the least."

Disney's aggressive marketing, which included promotions aimed at women that included sending stars to "The View" daytime talk show, resulted in women making up 40 percent of the audience for the action film, according to Disney's survey. Half the audience was also over 25 years of age, the studio also said.

Winner of the past two weekends, Sony's romantic comedy "Think Like a Man," slipped to second place with $8 million at North American (U.S. and Canadian) theaters, according to Hollywood.com.

"Hunger Games," from Lions Gate Entertainment, took the No. 3 spot in its seventh week in theaters, with $5.7 million, and has collected $380.7 million in U.S. and Canadian theaters during its run.

Warner Brothers' "The Lucky One" landed in fourth place with $5.5 million, and the animated film "The Pirates! Band of Misfits" from Sony finished in fifth place with $5.4 million.

The undisputed success of "Avengers" brought Disney the type of redemption that Hollywood loves to put on screen. In March, Disney released the expensive sci-fi adventure film "John Carter," one of the biggest flops in box office history. The company said it expects to lose up to $200 million on that film.

"Avengers" is the first Marvel film released by Disney since the media and theme park giant purchased Marvel Entertainment Inc in 2009 for $4 billion, a move to expand its appeal to boys with a stable of superheroes.

Disney would not say whether it plans to make a sequel. Sequels to films based on the Thor and Iron Man characters are scheduled for next year and Captain America in 2014.

About 52 percent of "The Avengers" ticket sales came from higher-priced 3D tickets, Disney said. The film sold more than $15 million in tickets on 275 digital-only large-screen IMAX theaters, IMAX said, which it said would tie it with "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows - Part 2" for its highest grossing opening weekend.

The first weekend in May kicks off Hollywood's summer movie-going season, a four-month period typically filled with big-budget action movies and sequels. Coming movies include Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises," "The Amazing Spider-Man," "Men in Black 3," and "Battleship."

Oil prices fall to six-month low. Gas to follow.

Oil prices fall below $99 a barrel on weak jobs report. At $3.80 a gallon, gasoline prices should follow oil prices down.?

The?price?of?oil?plunged to its lowest level in nearly six months Friday, falling below $100 per barrel for the first time since February. A drop in gasoline?prices?can't be far behind.

It's a welcome trend for motorists, with the summer driving season just around the corner. And it eases some pressure on the U.S. economy, which has shown only agonizingly slow growth in the nearly three years since the Great Recession ended.

Oil?fell $4.05, or 4 percent, to $98.49, after a weak U.S. jobs report offered the latest evidence that the global economy is weakening, possibly reducing demand for?oil. At the same time, there is mounting evidence that world?oil?supplies are growing.

"The jobs report was the coup de grace," said Judith Dwarkin, chief energy economist at ITG Investment Research. "But it's hard to see how?prices?could have stayed on the boil given ample supplies and continued economic uncertainty."

For the week,?oil?fell more than $6 and is now about $12 below its February high. U.S. gasoline?prices?have fallen to $3.80 per gallon from a peak of $3.94 in early April.

Now they could go as low as $3.50 per gallon by July 4, according to Tom Kloza, Chief?Oil?Analyst at theOil?Price?Information Service.

Tony Wei, a mechanical engineer from Piscataway, NJ., will welcome lower?prices. He travels 100 miles every day to and from his job in Morris County, N.J. He's also planning a 500-mile trip to Canada and a 400-mile trip to southwest Virginia this summer in his Honda Accord.

"Definitely, I'm going to notice it," he said. "I buy so much gas."

The picture of the?oil?market is the reverse of just a few months ago. Then, world?oil?demand looked to be rising quickly at the same time that world supplies were threatened by a host of small production outages and the potential for drastically reduced production from Iran, the world's third-biggest exporter.

Those developments raised the prospect that world supplies would be at their most tenuous just as the summer driving season arrived in the developed world. The?price?of U.S. benchmark?oil?rose to about $110. The?price?for international?oil?used to make most of the gasoline in the U.S. spiked even higher, to $128 per barrel.

Gasoline?prices?in the U.S. appeared to be on track to soar past $4 per gallon nationwide, another burden for U.S. consumers already suffering from high unemployment and pitiful wage growth.

Nokia PureView 808 pops up at the FCC, gets its innards splayed across the internet

'Twas only a matter of time, we suppose, before Uncle Sam got his mitts on Nokia's mobile imaging monster, the 808 Pureview, and that time is now. The folks at the FCC got a real good look at the Symbian handset sporting a 41-megapixel shooter, and have torn it asunder to ensure it's safe for human use. Before you go thinking that this visit to the FCC means that the 808's coming to American carriers, recall that Nokia's already nixed that idea. That said, if you're like us, that won't deter you from wanting to check out the drool-inducing pics of its innards in our gallery below. And, naturally, there's all the electromagnetic measurements you can handle at the source link.

Robot-assisted bypass reduces recovery, patient makes NASCAR race

ScienceDaily (May 4, 2012) ? Jay Savage is an avid NASCAR fan. A few months ago the 51-year-old bought a new motorhome and infield passes to the May race at Talladega Superspeedway. He hoped to see his favorite driver Kevin Harvick post his first victory of the season and repeat his 2010 Aaron's 499 win. But, the need for a heart bypass operation a week before the big race nearly derailed Savage's plans.

Then University of Alabama at Birmingham cardiac surgeon Trey Brunsting, M.D., offered Savage a minimally invasive surgery that would enable him to load his RV and head to his spot at the south tunnel -- in turn No. 2 between row one and 36 -- after removing the blockage in his heart.

"A traditional cardiac bypass procedure is done with an incision in the center of the chest and you separate the two halves of the breastbone, but it takes a long time for people to recover," Brunsting says. UAB Hospital is the only Birmingham-area hospital providing robotic-assisted heart bypass surgery. "A patient is in the hospital five to seven says and then bone has to knit back together. It takes three or four months for people to return to full activity."

That surgery certainly would have kept Savage from his NASCAR dream. But Brunsting told Savage he could repair his blocked artery and discharge him from the hospital in a few days using robot-assisted surgery.

"For about the past three and a half months I had been having pain where the shoulder strap on a seat belt goes," Savage says. "That's what kept bothering me, because it was up so high. I had an arteriogram, and they found a blockage. There wasn't any other option besides cracking my chest, and I was willing to do anything to make the race."

The blockage was at the beginning of the major artery on the front his heart where the short left main trunk splits into two, Brunsting says. "It's a difficult place to stent, and a bypass operation was a better long-term choice for him."

Robotic, or minimally invasive bypass operations, use a special scope system and three small port sites on the side of the chest to begin the operation and to ensure surgeons can prepare the mammary or thoracic artery on that side of the chest ready to use as a bypass graft. Then the surgeon may add two port sites and operate wholly with scopes or remove the scope and create a slightly larger incision between the ribs and do the bypass by hand -- but with direct vision.

Whether doctors use the scope system or direct vision with the 3-inch incision, recovery time is dramatically shortened. With the full scope, patients are in the hospital two to three days and usually able to return to full activity in two to three weeks, Brunsting says. With the small incision, patients are in the hospital three to five days and return to full activity in four to six weeks.

Savage says he is grateful for a short recovery and not to be facing another heart attack.

"I'm glad they found this and fixed it the way they did, instead of something happening while I was out there," Savage says. "It could have been bad. I didn't think it was as bad as it was. I mean open heart surgery, I would have never dreamed that in my life. A stent, that's nothing. That's like putting a Band-Aid on it. But, cracking your chest, that's something else. Now all I have is a little bitty scar and that's not bad."

As for Savage's Talladega plans, Brunsting say while not ideal for recovery, he should be fine.

"It's probably a little bit quick but he's otherwise healthy and in good shape," Brunsting says. "He's got a motor home with air conditioning and a place to lie down if he needs to take a little bit of a break or rest, and he's got friends and family that are going with him, so I'm actually pretty comfortable with it."

Arizona bans funding to Planned Parenthood

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer on Friday signed into law a bill banning abortion providers like Planned Parenthood from receiving money through the state, her office said in a statement.

The Republican-backed Whole Woman's Health Funding Priority Act cuts off funding for family planning and health services delivered by Planned Parenthood clinics and other organizations offering abortions.

"By signing this measure into law I stand with the majority of Americans who oppose the use of taxpayer funds for abortion," Brewer said in a statement.

Arizona joins six other states with similar laws, officials said. But three of those states ? Indiana, Kansas and North Carolina ? are facing legal challenges.

Arizona does not provide tax dollars for abortion, but backers said the law is needed to make sure that no indirect monies are funneled to organizations like Planned Parenthood that provide abortion and other health services. There were no estimates of how much money is involved.

But officials at Planned Parenthood Arizona, the state's largest abortion provider, said the law means that thousands of women in the state may now go without life-saving cancer screenings, birth control and basic health care.

Blow to Planned Parenthood on Texas abortions

"We are most concerned about the women and men who could be forced to go without health care as a result of this bill," Bryan Howard, Planned Parenthood Arizona's president and CEO, said in a prepared statement.

"We remain committed to providing Arizona communities with the professional, nonjudgmental and confidential health care they have relied on for 78 years," Howard said.

The anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony List called the bill a "major victory" in its fight to bar funding of abortion providers.

"Abortion-centered businesses like Planned Parenthood do not need or deserve taxpayer dollars," Marilyn Musgrave, vice president of government affairs for the organization, said in a written statement.

While Planned Parenthood suffered a setback in Arizona, it won a temporary battle in court on Friday with Texas. A federal appeals court ruled that the organization could participate in a health program for low-income women in Texas, despite a new state rule there that bans affiliates of abortion providers.

Raspberry Pi as a mobile computer ? Abhishek Bhatnagar

Since acquiring a Raspberry Pi a few weeks ago, I?ve been spreading the good word about this awesome device in my social circle, but lots of people it seems are unsure as to what its importance is. At a Sentinel Project meeting recently, we had a bit of discussion on this, and I thought it would be a good idea to record some of what transpired here.

Data Crunchers vs Social Connectors
Today, people use their computers primarily for Email, Facebook, Reddit and Twitter. So much so that our operating systems have been entirely redesigned to put these features at their forefront. However this is divergent from the original connotation of the word ?computing? which applies to machines that are good at data crunching as opposed to solving problems of connectivity. With smartphones, we have brought these latter kinds of computers into the era of mobile computing, but not the former. Raspberry Pi helps us do just that.

iPhones, Androids and Blackberries
The three best known smartphone operating systems today all do essentially the same thing. They give us access to email, text messages, BBMs, and other various social media outlets. But they still follow a very simplistic ?one app at a time? model, and hardly allow for much complexity in their usage. To be sure, the three do it in a different way from one another, and I like to put these differences like this: iPhones are to Android what Blackberries are to iPhones. Meaning that in the smartphone-ness hierarchy, the order starts at Android and ends at Blackberry. I have a feeling several of you will agree with me about Blackberries, but let?s consider why I am giving the iPhone a shaft here.

iPhones are notoriously closed devices that without jail breaking are owned as much by Apple as the person who paid for one. A key example of how they limit their users can be seen in the challenges that Mozilla faces in getting Firefox to run on iOS. Right now, if you go to the AppStore and search for Firefox, you?ll have to download ?Firefox Home?, which is nothing more than a front-end to Firefox that gives you access to your bookmarks, and browsing history. Firefox normally runs on a layout engine called Gecko, but since iOS devices do not allow execution of any 3rd party interpreters, Gecko is not allowed to run on these devices. This excludes iOS from running anything more than apps that Apple approves, and hardly makes them worthy of the title ?mobile computers?.

Android devices tend to do better in this department, but still are forced to follow a standard OSGi style activity life cycle.

Raspberry Pi
So what are those amongst us who wish to use mobile computers for untethered data crunching to do? Well, Canonical?s Ubuntu for Android program, which will allow high end Android devices to utilize one core to run Ubuntu Desktop edition is likely to help. But this project is far from being released, and will ultimately apply to expensive devices.

And this is where devices like Raspberry Pi come in. By giving us access to a free and open hardware that costs a pittance of smartphones, and can be run off 4 to 6 AA batteries, users and developers are free to write their applications in an unrestricted environment. The founders of this device created it primarily for use in Education, but what they?ve given the world is a true mobile computer that can do more than just run apps.

This phase of mobile computing is still in its infancy, but there?s nothing quite like an open environment to foster growth. I am sure that soon climate scientists, construction workers, zoologists, educators, rock climbers, geologists and others will find applications in devices like these that smartphones cannot handle. The world is already looking forward to an Arm processor revolution, but devices like Raspberry Pi will ensure that there will also be an application revolution for such devices.

For organizations like the Sentinel Project which seek the use of technology to solve humanitarian problems, Raspberry Pi is a boon.

Samsung and Dropbox offer Galaxy S III users up to 50GB of extra storage

Image

Samsung has partnered with Dropbox to offer extra storage for Galaxy S III owners. Once you've registered the newly minted handset, your current allocation will be topped up to a maximum of 50GB, not matching but doubling HTC's allowance. And just like Sense 4's offering, the free storage will remain valid for two years but there's no indication if there will be discounts for those who've become hooked on all that online real estate -- we hear it's very moreish.

Satellite Mobile phones

With the improve of enemy attacks, and possible massive of the mobile networks, people attending conventions have discovered the possibility of hiring satellite cell phones, finding the sole method to communicate wherever with any individual at anytime Satellite phone sales. If you?re a wild lifestyle photographer, opting for major shoots in the greatest jungles, the location where the need to connection becomes difficult, the satellite phone will be of much utilization in times of you want to communicate. Satellite phones are mainly useful in areas with no terrestrial facilities or in areas where the facilities is not useful, such as, storm inflicted areas, flood impacted areas, etc.

Right now, leading market sectors including, Iridium, Globalstar & Thuraya will provide satellite cell phone solutions, with each of them providing their own unique benefits and advantages. There are various alternatives for you to choose through, with the finest phone selection depending upon the job and desired destination, remembering that a satellite cell phone does not always offer you global protection or means world cell phone. You may visit the various internet sites which report on the types of cell phones available from various companies, highlighting the features together with coverage region and rates satellite phone plans. It is recommended that anyone review the information and statistics before looking at on taking up such a satellite phone.

Satellite phones created its debut in 1990s with a lot of excitement. While industrial applications of this sort of phones would not commence in earnest until eventually about 3 to 4 years back, the actual satellite cell phone companies experienced a lot of difficult weather, failing financially and technically. A few problems are readily available even today, when a satellite operator?s community fail. There could be other reasons also.

Iridium satellite is proud of over One hundred,000 clients with its 66 satellites and is supposed to be merely behind Globalstar together with 115,500 subscribers. Iridium has applied for another spectrum of three.1MHz to meet it?s growing demand of about 1,000 new subscribers monthly. Satellite cell phones are expensive and dear to operate, and yet it will serve the purpose in communication and then there is no other way of interacting.

A satellite phone, categorised as ?satphone?, is a cellular telephone program, that communicates directly with all the orbiting connection satellites and depending on the community architecture, the protection may be international, or simply for specific regions. These types of cell phones generally functions with the reduced orbiting satellites (LEOs), which is believed to provide a larger coverage and communication clearness. The size of a new satellite cell phone is comparable to the scale and bodyweight of the mobile phones that were used in the delayed 1980s as well as early 1990s and has a sizable retractable antenna. The phone tools itself is known as the terminal.

The real difference between a satellite phone which of a mobile mobile phone is that, while you communicate with the nearest base station in case there is a cellular phone, a satellite phone ?talks? to the nearest satellite. This type of satphone cable connections do not depend on any community. Some of this particular communication method covers a sizable area, with the help of multiple reduced orbiting satellites, relaying the actual signals in one to the other in order to hook up you to the actual destination that you wish to be attached.

Some of the satellite phones use satellites in geostationary orbit, maintaining virtually total international coverage functioning between 3 to 4 such satellites, thus reducing cost. You will need to note that geostationary revolving about satellites are placed at with regards to 22,500 to 25,000 a long way above the World. The LEOs, because the name suggests, are much reduced in space from your Earth, 300 to 700 miles, and therefore, a single satellite has constrained coverage. Therefore multiple this sort of satellites direct your contact to the needed destination. Alternatively, LEOs provide better connection clarity when compared with geostationary satellites, as a result of inherent postpone that it present. The least postpone with such satellites is 3.5 just a few seconds and this is often a major disadvantage of geo stationary satellites.

In case of satellite phones contacting geostationary satellites, the principle disadvantage is that, the phone requires a large antenna system for signal transmitting and wedding party. In such cases, the actual antenna should be of higher gain, which in turn needs more power to function. Consequently how big is the phone additionally increases which enable it to be when compared to the size of terrestrial mobile phones in the past, compared to the current tiny terrestrial mobile phones. Satellite phones demand a clear view of the sky to operate and will not perform inside a constructing, car or possibly a boat. It might require external antenna program to operate in such environments. This is clearly a significant disadvantage.

Within working of an cellular phone, the principle is based on dividing an area in to zones as well as base stations called ?cells?. When you communicate when you move, you leave a particular zone and key in another. Your own call is handed over from a previous cell where you have been, to the new one where you are at present passing through. Your connection is in electronic format switched for the cell your location in. Each and every cell phone and your Sim card together with hold enough information regarding the actual identity of your mobile handset and therefore the community is aware of best places to locate anyone when you are leaving behind one cell and entering the other.

Within remote areas, such connection is not possible due to the absence of mobile network. You may have experienced that, while using your mobile handset, as you handed different areas and specific zones, at a distinct area, anyone lose your connection. The cell phone community apparently concludes there. The network operates on the principle involving ?line of sight?, so that the towers, build for mobile communication, should be able to see each other. Within each and every cell the actual communication is fixed to about 31 miles, because the crow flies. Interaction difficulties happen in areas where the structure of the cell that you have merely left can?t properly understand the tower of your present cell zone. This particular creates slipped calls as well as breaking up involving voices. There are ofcourse other reasons for such events.

Satellite cell phones do not have this sort of restrictions, except it needs sometimes the crystal clear view of the night sky or an external antenna to operate. When you start your satellite phone, the actual signal increases to the satellites and becomes hooked on compared to that one or possibly a set of satellites, with which you happen to be registered. When creating a call, the protection that your contact should have, is determined and its relayed in one satellite for the other. About reaching the actual destination, the actual signal is directed to the relevant Earth stop, from where it can be directed by the gateway the actual to the contact destination. If you should be calling a satellite phone from a mobile, a new reverse activity takes place. The gateway techniques the call and switches the decision information. If you should be calling another suitable satellite cell phone from the one you have, your contact information is delivered up to the actual satellites, which is then carried to the World station. Subsequently the Earth stop transmits this back to the actual satellites and after that connects that you the known as satellite cell phone.

Satellite telephony is becoming increasingly more necessary with all the radio frequency bandwidths getting exhausted and also that he cable lines can not be fixed to all the parts of the planet. Satellite cell phone technology is recognized as a powerful invention to hold communication moving in this world, featuring its ability to let you communicate perhaps on the move also to any part of the planet, irrespective of where you are. When you find yourself lost in an expedition, a new satellite cell phone with you would certainly prove to be a new life-saver. You will be consistently in touch with any area of the world along with your phone.

Social Media Marketing Strategy-How to Make One for Your Business

Social marketing is so effective for online marketers that more and more of them are joining in. In the past years we?ve seen a huge boom among people using the Internet to build relationships and make new connections. People today are more willing to build those relationships online than they have been in the past. It?s not just the fact that you can get out there and really connect with the market you?re targeting but you can give them the chance to give you feedback as well. People who use the Internet today want to feel as though their messages are being received and acknowledged ? savvy marketers are finding ways to do just that.

Social media is making it easy for you to monitor the performance of your brand and understand the kind of response it is getting. In the past it was too difficult to monitor your brand and know how it was doing in the market. But now that social media marketing is on the scene, this has really altered things. You can actually read your prospects minds to determine how they feel about your product or directly converse them to get real time feedback. This is how the internet works in this decade. Social media has a huge role in helping businesses display their brands in an effective manner.

Another useful way to build your brand and take it to the next level through podcasting is to create and share presentations online, which could be created on targeted topics of interest for your audience. Sharing these presentations is quite easy with sites like SlideShare.net or Scribd.com where many users are allowed to upload their presentations. The nature of these sites, being filled with user generated presentations, is quite social. Sharing your presentation in this manner makes it easy for people who are interested in it to gain access. What this means is that you won?t have to put much more effort into getting your message seen by the masses than it takes to create and share your presentation.

Sites like Yelp and GetSatisfaction.com allow you to check out how your brand is doing in the marketplace. You?ll be able to get ?social feedback? for your product/service through these sites, which is obviously an important part of your overall social media marketing strategy. This will help you know your product inside out and assist you in giving the best service to your customers by acting on their feedback. This article shows how online social media can be leveraged to help a business grow and increase its sustainability. Undoubtedly, all businesses, no matter their size, should jump on the social media train, lest they get left behind and miss this golden opportunity. Social media marketing can help you establish relationships and expand your network of connections, which are both essential to dominating a niche. ?

Mark Pandori was worried. It was 2008, and he had just read the latest in a string of reports from Japan. The articles all described patients infected with a particular strain of gonorrhea that was less susceptible than usual to an important class of antibiotics. Pandori, director of the laboratory at the San Francisco Department of Public Health, knew that gonorrhea had become resistant to other antibiotics in past decades. Each time, the resistance seemed to arise in Asia and spread to California. He wondered if something new was heading across the Pacific.

The latest report from Japan described a test that could identify resistant strains of bacteria by isolating and amplifying the culprit gene. Pandori tried the procedure on 54 samples of gonorrhea bacteria collected that year from men in San Francisco. Five samples, or 9 percent, contained the altered gene. When he analyzed the bacteria in the lab, he found that they?like the Japanese strains?possessed partial resistance to cephalosporins, the only antibiotics that still work reliably and inexpensively against gonorrhea.

Pandori and his research partner at the time, a health department epidemiologist named Pennan Barry, were alarmed and baffled. No physicians in the state had reported any difficulties treating patients with gonorrhea. Cephalosporin resistance had apparently infiltrated California without anyone noticing. Perhaps it had started spreading across the country as well.

Last summer a surveillance network run by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed their fears. Using a different test, the CDC demonstrated that up to 1.4 percent of 5,900 gonorrhea bacterial samples from around the U.S. had diminished susceptibility to cephalosporins, meaning they would succumb only to unusually high doses. A New England Journal of Medicine editorial published in February said the occurrence of that partial resistance increased 17 times between 2006 and 2011. ?The threat of untreatable gonorrhea is emerging rapidly,? the editorial warned.

That threat is troubling for two reasons. First, gonorrhea is abundant: it is the second-most reported infectious disease in the U.S., with more than 600,000 new cases a year. Second, if untreated, it can cause widespread organ damage, pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility. Making matter worse, our current methods for tracking and controlling gonorrhea are actually contributing to the spread of resistant disease.

A Slow But Steady Spread
Gonorrhea is the first of the major sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) to tiptoe to the threshold of untreatability. True, chlamydia, which infects 426 of every 100,000 people in the country every year, is more common, and cases of syphilis, which doubled in incidence between 2000 and 2010, are growing faster. But syphilis infects only 4.5 of every 100,000 people, and neither chlamydia nor syphilis has developed significant resistance to antibiotics.

Gonorrhea, in contrast, has been developing defenses against drug treatment for decades. The latest news from Japan and California is making the disease a priority for public health planners?a status it has not known since before Alexander Fleming and the discovery of penicillin. Once antibiotics became abundant and inexpensive, gonorrhea and syphilis seemed like solved problems.

Neither infection was vanquished, however. Gonorrhea, in particular, held on by borrowing DNA from other bacteria to construct new microbiological defenses. It steadily gained resistance against entire classes of antibiotics: first the penicillins in the 1960s, then the tetracyclines in the 1980s, and Cipro and its chemical cousins, known as fluoroquinolones, in the 1990s. By 2000 the only class of drugs that could provide what public health strategies rely on?something that is inexpensive, delivered in a single dose and works well enough to obviate follow-up appointments?was the cephalosporins.

93% Headhunters

All Critics (55) | Top Critics (11) | Fresh (51) | Rotten (4)

"Headhunters" is a well-oiled, nasty machine.

That's some good acting by Hennie, but it's also good writing by co-scribes Lars Gudmestad and Ulf Ryberg. They freshen up familiar caper and thriller tropes, adapting the bestselling prose Norwegian crime writer Jo Nesbo.

This Norwegian thriller has a winning cutthroat perversity.

At a time when many mystery thrillers fall apart in the final fifteen minutes, Headhunters maintains its integrity.

The sex, nudity and violence are nonstop, but that's what makes "Headhunters" exciting entertainment.

Brown's panic is capably rendered, but his ordeals are not worth enduring to the bitter end.

Headhunters works best when punishing its lead excessively, continuously, and for no apparent reason.

...a first-class thriller with tension-enhancing music and Hitchcockian-quality cinematography highlighted by a sparkling performance by Aksel Hennie.

To say too much about this taut, and often quite gory, shocking and surprising twisty mystery would spoil the freezer-burn fun.

I can't remember the last time a movie surprised me as much as "Headhunters": not just its story twists and turns, which are considerable, but its continual stripping of character veneer and overall audaciousness left me breathless.

A nasty little crime thriller from Norway that twists you into a state of tense uncertainty right up to the end.

Headhunters is ridiculous, macabre, fun - see the original before it's irrevocably ruined by it's Hollywood remake.

With the twists of a cyclone and humor that on occasion edges close to farce, it's a knife-cutting satire that's not above a bellylaugh.

Acting is first rate, with a stellar turn by Aksel Hennie, and direction by Morten Tyldum is solid. I love seeing a terrific film from a place where you least expect it.

Darkly comic thriller from Norway in which a corporate headhunter who moonlights as an art thief gets a terrifying comeuppance.

Headhunters' title rapidly turns literal, and what seemed like a lightweight heist thriller careens into a bloody-minded game of cat and mouse.
