Dollar hits 2-month low as US economic momentum slows

The dollar is likely to take cues later this week from a batch of U.S. economic data, including the Institute for Supply Management's (ISM) gauges of the manufacturing and services sectors, as well as jobs numbers.

Both will be fresh pointers to U.S. economic momentum which has shown signs of flagging, suggesting the Fed may consider easing monetary policy further in June.

On Friday, the 10-year Treasury yield dipped to as low as 1.884 percent, its lowest level in nearly three months.

Other factors that suggest the dollar may stay under pressure against the yen include the existence of sizeable bearish positions in the yen, a lack of interest in foreign bond investment among Japanese investors, and the low probability of yen-selling intervention, traders said.

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? The widow and mother-in-law of a Pakistani man killed by a CIA contractor last year were murdered Monday, allegedly by the widow's father who may have feared she would remarry and take the "blood money" she received with her, police said.

The families of the two men killed by Raymond Davis last January received hundreds of thousands of dollars in exchange for pardoning the killer, a common legal practice in Pakistan. The money normally goes to the wife if her husband was killed.

The widow who was murdered Monday in the eastern city of Lahore, Zohra Haider, wanted to remarry and was supported by her mother, Nabeela Bibi, said police officer Athar Waheed. But her father, Shahzad Butt, opposed the move, possibly because she would take her fortune with her when she remarried, Waheed said.

"We will investigate that aspect as a possible motive," said Waheed.

Butt allegedly shot and killed his wife after having an argument about the issue in their house in a middle class neighborhood in Lahore that they bought with the blood money, said Waheed. He chased his daughter as she tried to escape and allegedly shot and killed her in the street, said Waheed. The shooter escaped.

Davis said he shot Haider's husband, Faizan, and another Pakistani man last year because they tried to rob him as he was driving his car through Lahore. The U.S. and Pakistan argued for nearly seven weeks over whether Davis had diplomatic immunity before the blood money was paid, and he was freed.

The U.S. denied paying the compensation to the families, but many believe it was simply routed through Pakistani officials. Reports of the total payout varied from $1 million to over $2 million.

A third Pakistani man was killed by a U.S. vehicle rushing to the scene of the shootings, but the driver was never taken into custody.

The incident seriously damaged the already troubled relationship between Pakistan and the U.S., one that got worse only months later when American commandos killed Osama bin Laden in a covert raid in a Pakistani garrison town last May.

The Nandan Nilekani-led Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) issues the Aadhaar number will be synchronised with the Permanent Account Number database maintained by the I-T department.

According to finance ministry while the Aadhaar will ensure effective disbursal of government schemes to citizens, the biometric PAN card database will help stop the forgery of PAN cards which begets economic crimes.

The PAN card-Aadhaar card is being developed as a national identifier document by the government. ?It is being integrated for ensuring implementation of schemes and creating an effective enforcement tool against financial offences like tax evasion and money laundering,? said finance ministry official.

It was in 2006 that finance ministry has first floated the idea to issue PAN in 2006. It was then proposed then that the biometric PAN cards would have the I-T assesses? fingerprints from both hands and the face.

However, the decision was kept pending as it was felt that both the agencies (UIDAI and I-T) would be
duplicating the effort to reach a common goal ? biometrics-based identity.

?The entire effort to have a biometric PAN card was to avoid duplication and stop fraudulent practices
by tax evaders and antinationals and now with the delivery of the UID number it has achieved the same
purpose, the official added,? said officials.
