Tech review: keyboards for the iPad

When the iPad first came out, it was pooh-poohed as an oversized version of the iPod touch, a mere fancy underpowered toy for tech enthusiasts and Apple fans.

But here we are, several years later, and the world?s most popular tablet computer is shaping up to be a decent replacement for a laptop. Though not as powerful as a desktop or laptop, the iPad often feels just as fast because it runs efficiently, letting you use only one app at a time. And hard drive storage is less of an obstacle these days, with cloud computing services like Dropbox or Sugarsync and Apple?s own iCloud storing our data online.

I have been coming around to the idea that most of the stuff I do on a laptop or a PC ? surfing the Web, writing for the Taipei Times, using Facebook, organizing photos ? can be done on an iPad. Safari and YouTube have got Web browsing and videos covered. For word processing, I ditched Microsoft Word long ago for a writer-friendly text editor (Writeroom and iAWriter are both decent apps to try). Facebook?s app does a decent job, and the iPad?s own Photos app has rudimentary editing capabilities. (Heck, now you can even get Adobe Photoshop for iOS and Android).

Of course, for an iPad to replace your laptop, you?ll need one thing: a real, physical keyboard. No matter how cool touch screens are, and despite the great leaps that have been made in voice recognition technology (with programs like Siri and Dragon Dictation), nothing beats the clackety-clack of a physical keyboard when it comes to comfort, accuracy and speed.

There are plenty of keyboard options available for iPad users, whether you?re a casual typist who just can?t get used to tapping on glass, or if you?re an office road warrior looking for a more lightweight and flexible computing option.

Here?s a look at some of the better keyboard accessories for iPad currently available in Taiwan. All products reviewed here connect to the iPad wirelessly using a Bluetooth connection.

STAND-ALONE KEYBOARDS

I discovered that the best solution for turning my iPad into a work computer was already laying around the house. At home, we use the Apple Wireless Keyboard (NT$2,390) with a Mac desktop computer, and it works like a charm with the iPad.

Apple?s keyboard is a natural choice for iPad typists. It has standard-size keys and good ergonomics. The smooth chiclet buttons, which are similar to the ones on Apple?s Macbook laptops, have the right feel: they?re not too squishy and have a smooth, satisfying click.

But if you?re going to use the Apple Wireless Keyboard with an iPad, a case and stand are a must. I found Opt?s KeePad (NT$1,080) to be a great solution. This cleverly designed faux-leather case, tailored especially for Apple?s keyboard, folds out with an attached stand sewn inside on which you can prop up your iPad. The KeePad holds the iPad steadily in either landscape (with the screen longer from left to right) or portrait views, and it was easy to adjust the viewing angle.

The KeePad case feels sturdy and well built, but it?s light enough not to be a burden in your backpack or bag. Combined with the Apple Keyboard and iPad 2, it weighs around 1.1kg, the same weight of the 11-inch Macbook Air.

Now, you might think carrying a separate keyboard case sounds like a hassle compared to the all-in-one form factor of a laptop. But this can also be a boon for travelers: you can use the iPad as a tablet on the bus or plane, and then as a laptop when you get to your hotel.

A Most Peculiar Sunset

You wouldn't know it, not right away, but there is something strange about this picture. It's a sunset, yes, but notice the blush of color right above the sun. It's blue. And as you look up, the blue fades into a faint rose or pink.

Now think about the sunsets you've seen, how often the sky can turn golden, or orange, sometimes pink, red, but when you look up, away from the setting sun, those colors fade back to a pale, twilight blue? It's rare to see a sunset dipped in blue.

So this photo is a puzzle: it's blue where the red should be and red where the blue should be. Why?

Because we're not on Earth. This is a Martian sunset. On May 19, 2005, the camera on NASA's little robot, the rover named Spirit, took this picture while sitting in the Gusev crater on Mars. NASA snapped the photo, says the press release, "around 6:07 in the evening of the Rover's 489^th Martian day."

Apparently, Mars has blue sunsets all the time. Earth doesn't.

NASA admits that there's a color filter on Spirit's camera that exaggerates the colors slightly, but they say the blues you see here "are similar to what a human would see" on Mars. Not so much the pinks. Pinks are slightly more pronounced in these photos, but the blues are true colors.

So here's our question: Why are Martian sunsets blue?

The Air On Mars Is Different From The Air On Earth

On Earth, the air is mostly nitrogen and oxygen. We've also got moisture, dust particles, smoke, aerosols, pollen, salt from the ocean. The atmosphere on Earth is denser ? meaning there are more molecules per cubic inch in our air.

Martian air, by contrast, is much, much thinner, about 1percent the density of air on Earth, plus the gasses are different: they've got CO₂, nitrogen and argon, but most important, says Mark Lemmon, associate professor of planetary sciences at Texas A&M University, air on Mars is rich with teeny, teeny particles of dust. Their dust is smaller than our dust, and they've got more of it in the Martian sky. Dust is the key to why the two sunsets look different, so we'll be keeping our eye on Martian dust.

Light Scatters Differently On Mars Than It Does On Earth

Let's stand facing the sun on Mars. It's early evening. The sun is setting. Light is streaming toward our eyes, moving through the dusty air. What happens?

Sunshine, as you know, contains many different wavelengths of light. If you catch a beam of light in a prism (Newton did this) it breaks into a rainbow of colors ? reds, violets, blues. When the sunshine on Mars hits the clouds of fine dust floating through the air, it also breaks into different colors. Martian dust is exactly the right size to absorb the blue wavelengths of light and scatter red wavelengths all over the sky. That's why if you are standing on Mars and look away from the setting sun, most of the sky is rosy, pink, and various shades of red.

But now look straight at the setting sun. On Mars, the beams of light streaming toward you, having lost their red waves, show the wavelengths that haven't scattered off. That remaining light is predominantly blue. So when you look straight at the sun on Mars, you see a haze of blue. Look away from the sun, and the light is red.

It's exactly the opposite on Earth.

Here, when the sunshine hits our atmosphere, the waves that scatter are blue in color. That's why everywhere we look, our sky is blue ? except when we look straight at the setting sun. There, the blue light is missing, so the remaining wavelengths predominate, and they are mostly the reds, the golds, the oranges.

Our atmosphere scatters blue; Mars' atmosphere scatters red.

Our sunsets feature reds. Mars' sunsets feature blue.

That's because our air is different from Martian air.

What About That Blue Halo Around The Sun?

Take a look at this short animation from NASA. Called "I'm Dreaming of A Blue Sunset," It's a reconstruction from still photographs, where you can see a bright blue halo around the sun as it sinks to the horizon. Why is that halo there?

According to Professor Lemmon, when sunshine hits Martian dust, the blue light doesn't bounce far. It sticks near the dust, pingponging around at close range. That's why if there's a dust storm on the horizon, (and that's what seems to be happening in the video), the area around the sun traps a lot of blue light, and the sun seems to glow blue.

Red light, as we've said, ricochets much farther off, so in the video, the reddish patches are some distance from the sun, the blue is tucked in close.

The point being, if you happen to be camping out on Mars and see an intense blue sunset like the one in the video, make sure the wind isn't blowing in your direction, because a few hours from now, that sandstorm might blow your tent down. (You did remember to bring a tent, no?)

Authors Julia Graham and David Kaye and editor Philip Jan Rothstein are all seasoned specialists and the text is a solid guide to the basic components of creating business continuity plans of all types.

Among the book's strengths is its demonstration that planning about business continuity is starting to evolve from its roots in IT backup, and that risk management no longer means simply buying an insurance policy. There is also an emphasis on the importance of involving senior organizational leadership in the planning and the need to identify all stakeholders at some point in the process.

Helpfully, there are a number of useful suggestions for doing this. Some sections provide considerable information, and there are a number of useful outlines. One provides suggested section headers for a continuity plan.

This book is a very good beginner's reference guide for any manager new to the business continuity game. Experienced planners will find it a helpful refresher.

A great book to understand the BCM in light of Risk Management

I have chosen this book from the list of Business Continuity Institute recommended literature. I cannot say it was a well-informed choice. However I did not regret it even a single bit. One thing that instantly attracted me was the link between Business Continuity and Risk Management in its heading.

The book was true to its heading.

Pros:
- The book is very well-structured
- The book is comprehensive (and beware... 400-pages long!)
- The book is full of real-world examples, case studies, and templates
- It is not only useful for those on BC side, but to th elesser mortals on IT service continuity side (like me)
- There is comprehensive glossary at the end

Cons:
- The language is at times somewhat difficult to read (bear in mind, I am non-native speaker)
- Few "broken links" and minor inconsistencies - i.e. chapter A references chapter B, while it should be C
- The book might have a bit more illustrations
- No headings (except chapters) numbering
Despite its minor "bugs", the book is worth every penny spent to buy and every minute spent reading it. My suggestion - while reading this book, have a pencil and stick-on bookmarks ready. You will be coming back to it!
I refer to this book in my day-to-day work, and find it becoming my good friend in guiding me through the maze of Business Continuity best practices. Many thanks to Julia Graham and David Kaye.

The circumstances that lead Julia and I to write this book are interesting and help to explain what it is, and why it is quite different from other books. The Institute of Risk Management, who are the International Institute for vocational risk management education, asked me to be their lead examiner on business continuity. The first task was to set out to find a textbook that takes the organisation wide and holistic risk view on business resilience. I needed to find one that had the vision to see that business continuity as something that includes, but is now so very much more than, the fast replacement of technology and workstations.

I do believe that this is so important, not least because the science of business continuity must keep pace with change amongst our own `stakeholders', i.e. the organisations that employ us and also their own stakeholders. If we do not evolve and take our rightful place in the strategic thinking of the organisation, we will increasingly be sidelined from the crucial and the real resilience debates; and others will be asked to manage stakeholder expectations.

The modern day organisational structure has so many more single points of risk that potentially offer complete destruction than the business models of the 1990s. The supply and the delivery chains are outsourced, the intellectual assets are much more critical and diverse and are, even in themselves, outsourced. The workforce is managed by third parties, and the double-barrelled risks of brand and speed are the real dependencies at the heart of the modern-day organisational promise. It is no coincidence that the board, the risk manager, investor, regulator, auditor, as well as the business continuity manager, increasingly sees resilience an ever more important concern amongst their worry beads.

In spite of asking many friends and fellow professionals to search out a book for me that captures that wide-business resilience , and thus bring together as a team the various managers concerned with risk, we failed to find even one.

The upshot was that Julia and I set out to write one. This was not only to provide the Institute with their needed textbook but because we feel strongly that the business continuity industry does need to move on into the 21st century. We hope that the book will encourage that process and encourage co-operation between erstwhile silos of risk management that, in isolation can be so dangerous to today's organisations.

We have written the book therefore with a view, not only to aid students to develop their understanding, but also as a good read for everybody who has a responsibility to ensure that their function, public service or profit making, can continue to deliver on its promises.

Chaperones among new Secret Service conduct rules

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Embarrassed by a prostitution scandal, the Secret Service will assign chaperones on some trips to enforce new rules of conduct that make clear that excessive drinking, entertaining foreigners in their hotel rooms and cavorting in disreputable establishments are no longer tolerated.

The stricter measures, issued by the Secret Service on Friday for agents and employees, apply even when traveling personnel are off duty.

The policies, outlined in a memorandum obtained by The Associated Press, are the agency's latest attempt to respond to the scandal that surfaced as President Barack Obama was headed to a Latin American summit in Cartagena, Colombia, earlier this month.

The embattled Secret Service director, Mark Sullivan, urged agents and other employees to "consider your conduct through the lens of the past several weeks."

Sullivan said the rules "cannot address every situation that our employees will face as we execute our dual-missions throughout the world." He added: "The absence of a specific, published standard of conduct covering an act or behavior does not mean that the act is condoned, is permissible or will not call for ? and result in ? corrective or disciplinary action."

"All employees have a continuing obligation to confront expected abuses or perceived misconduct," Sullivan said.

Ethics classes will be conducted for agency employees next week.

The changes were intended to staunch the embarrassing disclosures since April 13, when a prostitution scandal erupted in Cartagena involving 12 Secret Service agents, officers and supervisors and 12 more enlisted military personnel who were there ahead of Obama's visit to the Summit of the Americas.

But the new policies raised questions about claims that the behavior discovered in Cartagena was an isolated incident: Why would the Secret Service formally issue new regulations covering thousands of employees if such activities were a one-time occurrence?

"It's too bad common-sense policy has to be dictated in this manner," said Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee. "New conduct rules are necessary to preventing more shenanigans from happening in the future, and whether these are the best, and most cost effective, rules to stop future misconduct remains to be seen."

The rules did not mention prostitutes or strip clubs. But they prohibit employees from allowing foreigners, except hotel staff or foreign law enforcement colleagues, into their hotel rooms. They also ban visits to "nonreputable" establishments, which were not defined. The State Department was expected to brief Secret Service employees on trips about areas and businesses considered off-limits to them.

During trips in which the presidential limousine and other bulletproof vehicles are transported by plane, senior-level chaperones will accompany agents and enforce conduct rules, including one from the agency's Office of Professional Responsibility.

The chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., praised the new rules as "very positive steps by the Secret Service to make clear what is expected of every agent and also makes clear what will not be tolerated."

The Secret Service has forced eight employees from their jobs and was seeking to revoke the security clearance of another employee, which would effectively force him to resign. Three others have been cleared of serious wrongdoing. The military was conducting its own, separate investigation but canceled the security clearances of all 12 enlisted personnel.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano assured senator this week that the incident in Colombia appeared to be an isolated case, saying she would be surprised if it represented a broader cultural problem. The next day, the Secret Service acknowledged it was investigating whether its employees hired strippers and prostitutes in advance of Obama's visit last year to El Salvador. Prostitution is legal in both Colombia and El Salvador.

"If they are true, the emergence of these anecdotes about past Secret Service misconduct is precisely why our committee will be trying to determine if such behavior is widespread," said Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., who heads the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. The committee has asked Sullivan for information "related to misconduct by agents on assignment," he said.

In a confidential message to senators on Thursday, the Secret Service said its Office of Professional Responsibility had not received complaints about officer behavior in El Salvador but would investigate.

On Capitol Hill, early signs surfaced of eroding support for the Secret Service director. Grassley said Sullivan's job could be secure if the scandal were an isolated incident. "But if it goes much deeper, you know, nothing happens or nothing's changed in Washington if heads don't roll," Grassley said on CBS "This Morning."

The White House said the president remained supportive of Sullivan and confident in the capabilities of the Secret Service.
