Military honors called off for funeral

BROOKLYN, Ohio - The funeral home hosting the services for the man police said shot and killed his wife and daughter at the Brooklyn Cracker Barrel said he will no longer have a funeral with full military honors.

John Hesson, funeral director at D.W. Newcomer?s Sons in Kansas City, Missouri, told NewsChannel5 the military contacted the business Thursday to say the request for a full military honor funeral for 51-year-old Kevin Allen has been denied.

?Military honors are not happening. They will not be a part of the service,? said Hesson. Lt. Colonel Teresa Connor said the family of Allen asked the funeral home to make the request.

Hesson said the funeral home was preparing to have service members come for the funeral Saturday before receiving word of the military?s decision. Connor said the military refused the honor because Allen violated US code Title 38 section 24-11. The code basically says because Allen died and could not be prosecuted he does not deserve the honor.

Earlier Thursday, an obituary posted on the Kansas City Star?s website said Kevin Allen?s funeral scheduled would include ?full military honors.? The write-up said he served in the United States Air Force from 1979-1983.

Kevin Allen?s services will be held at Northland Cathedral in Kansas City, Missouri. His body will be cremated.

According to Brooklyn police, Kevin Allen entered the Cracker Barrel restaurant on the evening of April 12 with a long gun and shot his wife, 42-year-old Kate Allen, his daughter, 10-year-old Kerri Allen and other daughter, 10-year-old Kayla Allen.

Officers then shot and killed Kevin Allen as he was leaving the restaurant after police said he refused to comply with their orders.

Kate and Kerri Allen were pronounced dead at the scene. Kayla was taken to the hospital, and had been upgraded from serious to fair condition , but slipped back to critical Thursday. An employee told NewsChannel5 the family had been celebrating Kerri's birthday that night.

Kate Allen had called 911 prior to the shooting to report that she told her husband that she was going to leave him, and that her husband was circling the parking lot waiting for her to come out.

Audio recordings of police radio traffic revealed an officer saw Kevin Allen circling the lot as he pulled up to the scene. Moments later, the officer said Kevin Allen?s car was parked in front of the restaurant and Kevin was no longer in sight.

Several 911 calls were made from patrons and an employee inside the restaurant reporting the shooting. No one else was hurt in the shooting
