Burglars smash windows at three Boca Raton restaurants

Employees at three Asian restaurants in Boca Raton arrived to work Monday to a similar scene: Glass windows and doors smashed in overnight heists.

The burglar, or burglars, emptied the cash registers at China One, at 1285 W. Palmetto Park Road and Sakura Thai & Japanese Cuisine, at 2201 N. Federal Highway, according to Boca Raton Police. Someone smashed a brick through the door of nearby Pine Garden, but the hurricane-resistant glass stopped the burglar from getting inside the restaurant, at 1668 N. Federal Highway.

Police are still searching for the restaurant intruders, although it's not yet clear if they are connected, said Police Spokeswoman Sandra Boonenberg.

"It is unusual that three [Asian] restaurants would be targeted in one night," she said.

At China One, $120 was gone from the cash register and $20 from the tip jar, police said. At Sakura Thai & Japanese Cuisine, $30 in change was taken from the register and $300 from a desk drawer.

Somsak Sowapark, 52, owns Sakura and said it's the second time in three years his restaurant has been burglarized. He said he had an alarm system installed, but it didn't go off during the recent break-in and didn't alert police.

"I pay for it every month and it doesn't work," he said, adding that an alarm technician has since checked it and said it works. "I don't know what's going on."

The other two restaurants targeted did not have alarms.

The glass door at Sakura has since been repaired and cost Sowapark about $625.

Sowapark lives near his restaurant and tries to check on it sometimes after closing, he said, but it's impossible to stop professional thieves. He plans to put plywood on the glass door before closing for the night.

"At least that might delay the thief a little," he said.
